From Saturday, Oct. 17 through Sunday, Nov. 15, 2026, Old Town Scottsdale has free public programming on 15 of 30 days. That's one night of the Scottsdale Fall Festival, four days of the DÃa de los Muertos art installation and ten nights of Canal Convergence. All of it happens at two addresses: Scottsdale Civic Center at 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd. in October, then the Scottsdale Waterfront along the Arizona Canal in November.
For anyone who lives within reach of Old Town, the season works best as one run of evenings with a short break in the middle. The dining rooms between the two venues changed over the summer, too.
The October half sits on Drinkwater
Civic Center hosts both October events. The renovated park opened in 2023, with three outdoor stages, a splash pad and fog feature between City Hall and Civic Center Library, and 140 new shade trees. This fall it hosts two events a week apart.
Scottsdale Fall Festival, Saturday, Oct. 17, 5 to 9 p.m. The city's calendar says the 2026 festival is "leveling up," with more event space and an extra hour. Everything is free:
- Live band and DJ
- Local food trucks and a cocktail garden
- Trick-or-treating and carnival games
- Hands-on arts, crafts and activities
- City of Scottsdale department booths and community information
The city tells families to bring costumes. That puts Old Town's trick-or-treating two weeks ahead of Halloween, on a Saturday.
Scottsdale DÃa de los Muertos Fiestas, Oct. 22 to 25. The altars and large-scale art go up first. The installation is open throughout Civic Center Thursday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The free main festival is Saturday, Oct. 24, from 1 to 10 p.m. It includes music all day, food, arts, crafts and merchants, plus the Catrina Fashion Contest, the Catrina Fashion Show, the Desfile de los Muertos procession and an appearance by Lupita Infante.
With the installation open from 8 a.m., you can see it on a quiet Thursday or Friday morning before Saturday's crowds. You'd see the altars and art without the procession or the stage schedule.
The gap between Oct. 25 and Nov. 6 is when the neighborhood rooms count
The DÃa de los Muertos installation closes Sunday, Oct. 25, and Canal Convergence opens Friday, Nov. 6. That leaves about ten days with no festival running. Several restaurant changes from this summer sit right between the two venues.
Ponderosa House, 4121 N. Marshall Way
The biggest change is at Marshall Way and Indian School Road. Ponderosa House opened in May in the former Frank & Lupe's Old Mexico space. It comes from Jacob Finley, the restaurateur behind Karsen's Grill, an Old Town neighbor for years. The restaurant has two parts. A cantina at the front has a picture window facing the street. Behind it, past a small patio, the main dining room sits in a small house built in 1922. The house still has its original wood floors, red brick fireplace and ceiling beams.
Phoenix New Times reviewed it in July under the headline "the neighborhood restaurant Old Town needed." The reviewer described a dining room full of families, couples and a lone diner watching baseball at the bar. The menu, which the restaurant calls "Arizona-born," included these dishes in July:
| Dish | What it is | Price as reported, July 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Lottie Deno | Green chile vodka and clarified tomato water cocktail | $17 |
| Ponderosa Pan Y Pimiento | Pimento dip with guajillo tomato jam and bacon | $21 |
| El Puerco Pasta | Green chile pork shoulder ragout with rigatoni | $24 |
| Pastrami Senor | Kruse pastrami, green chiles, smoked Gouda on sourdough | Handhelds range $18 to $21 |
The cantina also has its own drinks menu, separate from the dining room's. That gives you a place for a drink before or after either festival without sitting down to a full dinner.
Where Frank & Lupe's went
The recipes behind the old Marshall Way restaurant now live at The Shops Gainey Village, 8787 N. Scottsdale Road. Phoenix Magazine's May roundup reported that Frank & Lupe's had resurfaced there using the Bernal family's recipes.
What closed
Two long-running Old Town spots won't be part of this fall. Old Town Tortilla Factory closed after 30 years, according to Phoenix Magazine's July roundup. Sel Bistro closed after a decade in Old Town, according to the August roundup. If either one was your usual stop before a Civic Center event, you'll need a new plan this year.
What's coming during the gap
Chef Matt Carter's Dash, an all-day restaurant and market at 9619 N. Hayden Road, #101, was announced in late September for a November opening. It wasn't open as of the announcement. It could open around the same time as Canal Convergence, but no date has been set.
The November half sits on the water
Canal Convergence returns Nov. 6 through 15 with the theme "Western Nature." It's free and runs for ten nights. The art sits in and above the Arizona Canal and along the paths and bridges between Scottsdale Road and Goldwater Boulevard. Solstice Park, 4420 N. Scottsdale Road, is the listed address.
Closing time changes depending on the night:
| Nights | Hours |
|---|---|
| Fri., Nov. 6 to Sat., Nov. 7 | 6 to 10 p.m. |
| Sun., Nov. 8 to Thu., Nov. 12 | 6 to 9 p.m. |
| Fri., Nov. 13 to Sat., Nov. 14 | 6 to 10 p.m. |
| Sun., Nov. 15, closing night | 6 to 9 p.m. |
That's six weeknights and Sundays that close at 9 p.m. and four weekend nights that run to 10. Weeknights give you less time on the canal and probably smaller crowds. Weekends add an hour. The program lists nightly fire shows, live music and dance, family workshops, rotating food trucks and vendors, and a beer and wine garden.
Scottsdale Arts has named 11 works for 2026. These are the ones with the most published detail:
- "grandmother turtle" by In Theory Art Studios, made with Santa Clara Pueblo artist Nora Naranjo-Morse and Arizona Poet Laureate Laura Tohe.
- "the weight of light," a kinetic installation shaped like a lightning bolt, also by In Theory Art Studios.
- "Western Fire Garden" by Walter Productions, a floating canal piece that combines fire, light, sound and sculpture.
- "The Way The West Was Sold" by Jolly Productions. Four performers play period snake-oil salesmen and broadcast advertisers, and they perform on all ten nights.
The rest of the list is "APOGEE" by Chalk River Labs, "Another Slice of Reality: An Evolving Nature" by Shaoyu Su x LedPulse, "Desert Choir" by Ottomata, "KaKtos" by Amigo & Amigo, "Prairie Fire" by True North Absurdities, and two pieces by William Nemitoff with Curious Form, "Dream Rider" and "Sky Wrangler."
Because "The Way The West Was Sold" runs every night, the live performance doesn't decide which night you go. A quieter weeknight works as well as a Saturday for seeing it.
The Saturday that overlaps
Saturday, Nov. 7 is the second night of Canal Convergence. It's also the day of the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships at WestWorld, 16601 N. Pima Road. If you'd like to do both, polo in the day and the canal from 6 p.m. is possible. If you'd rather skip the crowds on a two-event Saturday, the following Monday through Thursday have the same art with an earlier close.
Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts also opened its 2026–27 season this month. Paula Cole plays Oct. 2, ahead of the outdoor events.
The season, laid out
Put together, the next seven weeks run like this:
- Sat., Oct. 17: Fall Festival at Civic Center, 5 to 9 p.m.
- Thu., Oct. 22 to Sun., Oct. 25: DÃa de los Muertos altars and art at Civic Center, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Scottsdale Arts hasn't published parking, trolley or transit guidance for Canal Convergence yet, and the event pages ask visitors to sign up for updates. Check those pages before opening weekend if you plan to drive in.
Part of what you're paying for in a home near Old Town is being close to free events like these.
